A bill banning cultivated meat has been definitely approved by Italy’s Chamber of Deputies with 159 for, 53 against and 34 abstentions. It forbids the production and sale of synthetic meat and the use of terminology specific to butchery, charcuterie and seafood for processed food containing vegetable proteins, and has been signed by ministers Francesco Lollobrigida (Agriculture) and Orazio Schillaci (Health). For supporters, including Coldiretti President Ettore Prandini, it represents a defence of ‘Made in Italy’ products and food quality.
The bill is under Presidential scrutiny amid fears of an EU infringement procedure.
